May 8, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. While this date is widely commemorated as the official end of the war, the city of Darmstadt experienced its liberation already on March 25, 1945.

For the PEASEC research group at TU Darmstadt, this anniversary is not only a time of remembrance but also a reminder of our ongoing responsibility. At the intersection of computer science as well as peace and security research, we explore how technological progress can both protect and endanger peace and democracy.

In an age where digital tools are increasingly used in conflicts and targeted disinformation threatens societal cohesion, the legacy of World War II is both a warning and a mission.

We view this occasion as a moment to reflect — and as a call to shape digital technologies in the service of human dignity and peaceful coexistence.

PEASEC remains committed to researching how security, responsibility, and peace can be jointly realized in the digital age.
