PEASEC researchers Tom Biselli, Enno Steinbrink and Christian Reuter, in a collaboration with Franziska Herbert and Gina Maria Schmidbauer-Wolf, had their paper titled “On the Challenges of Developing a Concise Questionnaire to Identify Privacy Personas” accepted at one of the top conferences on privacy, the annual Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium (PETS) 2022 conference in July 11–15, 2022 Sydney, Australia.
In this paper, they shed light on the challenges associated with developing a concise questionnaire on the basis of which privacy personas can be determined. Determining such privacy personas is crucial for developing tailored user support that can improve the usability of technical support in the area of personal data protection. In this paper, they transparently report on the methodological weaknesses of the developed questionnaire and highlight the pitfalls associated with developing valid and reliable questionnaires. Their segmentation of three user groups “Fundamentalists”, “Pragmatists” and “Unconcerned” is discussed in terms of related persona conceptualizations, the importance of a methodologically sound investigation of corresponding privacy dimensions and the lessons learned in the development process.
